Confessions of a Music Nazi

Nazi :
derogatory term for a person who is fanatically dedicated to, or seeks to control, some activity, practice, etc.

Warning, Long post ahead

Hi,I'm a self professed music junkie. I listen to all kind of genres. Alternatives, Jazz,Swing, Punk, Classical, Soft Rock, Hard Rock. Also I can be very anal when it comes to tagging song titles and artist, even down to it's genre;

I also have this habit of over-analyzing songs. Dissecting every bits and pieces of every line trying to make out it's meaning and significance.

Most hit songs of late tend to make least bit of (or none) sense. Which explains my incline towards more older songs.

According to one singer she's so '3008' and you're '2000 and late'

And what the hell is a Hollaback girl anyway?

No I won't watch you 'Crank Dat' nor will I "Superman dat hoe', whatever that's suppose to mean.

Also I don't understand the fascination with Wonder girls, I guess it must be this season's hit song and will likely be forgotten after awhile just like the others like "Ketchup Song", "Lemon Tree", "Macarena", "The Cup of life" and "Crazy Frog" just to name a few.

Songs that contradict themselves.

First line of the song goes;
"So no one told you life was gonna be this way"

But then the second verse starts with;
"Your mother warned you there'd be days like these"

Here's another one;

First verse;

"Every morning there's a halo hangin
from the corner of my girlfriend's four post bed
I know it's not mine but I'll see if I can use it for
the weekend or a one-night stand"

So from here we've established that not only does he cheats on her, he uses her place for one-night stands as well. But it gets better on the next verse;

"Couldn't understand
How to work it out
Once again as predicted left my broken heart open
and you ripped it out"

Mr cheater got his heart broken? Now that's some serious denial.

So suffice to say, I'm somewhat peeved when I come across some new songs which meets the aforementioned criteria.

And of course there's also songs which piques my interest,for instance ;

Am I more than you bargained for yet?
I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
Cause that's just who I am this week
Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song

Drop a heart, break a name
We're always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team

We're going down, down in an earlier round
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it

To me, this song is about a guy's point of view who is in a platonic friendship with a girl but wants more out of it.

"Am I more than you bargained for yet?" - Asking if she's overwhelmed by his feelings

"I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear, Cause that's just who I am this week"
- Indicates he is willing to pretend he is not romantically interested in her to keep the friendship going

"I'm just a notch in your bedpost but you're just a line in a song"
- he means nothing to her, and he's trying to make it seem like she means the same to him

"Drop a heart, break a name"
- Refers to his feeling about her slowly destroying him by seeing another guy

"We're always sleeping in, and we're sleeping for the wrong team" - He's always Sleeping in as in waiting too long to tell her his feelings, but they're seeing other people at the moment.

"We're going down, down in an earlier round" - He's failing faster than he thought he would

"And sugar, we're going down swinging" - To go down swinging, to keep fighting for something even though failure is imminent.

"I'll be your number one with a bullet"
- An example of an extravagant promise he makes to her in an attempt to get her to love him

Depending on how you perceive it, it can also viewed in another light; The girl mentioned here is his significant other. However, their relationship is in trouble and failing. The song can be in regards of his feelings in the downfall of their relationship.

That was a hugely immense study on the lyrics. I'm sure that not many of us now really did listen to the lyrics anymore.

I guess that I agree with you that I also like to hear the older songs due to its less than crappy lyrics.

I never interpreted the song that way. :/

Well that's just me, analyzing every line in a song. Guess not much people really listen to the lyrics nowadays.

I look forward to your view :D

@Working Bee,

Haven't really explored most of Maroon5's song, only the popular ones. Though I really like that single "She Will Be Loved"
