Designed for humans, inspired by nature, the Samsung GALAXY S III reveals a new concept of smartphone that is effortlessly smart and intuitively simple

May 24, 2012Samsung Malaysia Electronics, a leading global mobile phone provider today announced the commercial availability the Samsung GALAXY S III into the Malaysian market and I was invited to their media launch at One World Hotel @ 1U today.

As a owner of a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone since last year, I can honestly say that to date it's the phone I vouch for whenever anyone asks. And if you know me, I'm quite anal about gadgets (having tinkered with a HTC HD2 that runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 and converting it to an Android O\S during the end of Winmo's reign). So whenever I'm looking for a new phone, I simply must have the best hardware specs and ensure that it's system is fully customizable.  And when I heard of the S3 I was thrilled and couldn't wait to give it a go.

An orchestra next to the stage. How awesome is that?

Since I am currently using an S2, comparisons and references to it's predecessor will be made.

First impression

Fits perfectly in my hand, though initially when I saw the leaked photos online I didn't really agree with the rounded corners. There was just something with the uniformity of the curves from other areas like the home button that just feels right. Another improvement I've noticed is that the front bezel has been pushed slightly back as to minimize any friction on it when it's facing down or in your pocket. A design choice that I am happy about, as the part of the bezel on my S2 has gotten chipped off due to negligence as seen below :

Notice the slightly lowered bezel on the S3 and the damaged bezel on the S2

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S3 Specifications :

Processor : Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 (S2 : Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9)

From Dual to Quad processing power. Without looking at the clock speed, it's basically double the processing capability. Besides offering a significant performance over the S2's processor, it also consumes 20% less power and thus giving better battery life. The new generation of processor powering the S3 is named Exynos 4 Quad

Network : 2.5G (GSM/ GPRS/ EDGE): 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz3G (HSPA+ 21Mbps): 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz 4G (Dependent on market)

Display : 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED (1280x720) display (S2 : 800x480 pixels, 4.3 inches)

2012-05-24 20.12.39
Comes with two color varients. Pebble Blue and Marble White

Clearly a screen size improvement over the S2, and while handling the S3 I didn't really feel any sort of clunky feeling like I did with the Samsung Note

OS : Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (S2 : Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread)

Every Android fanboy's dream os, the Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS for short. Is Android's latest O/S. Is available on the S3 out of the box. (Though it's also available to S2 user's as well and can be updated over the air with Samsung's Kies Upadate) Some new features include improved task manager switching, resizable widgets, a new fancy lock screen, and cloud-connected capabilities (streaming music from your home computer)

Trivia bit; Android has named every one of it's O/S version after sinful desserts, in an alphabetical order, starting from their first update, called Cupcake 1.5 then to Donut 1.6 to Eclair 2.0/2.1 to Froyo 2.2.x to Gingerbread 2.3.x to Honeycomb 3.x and finally Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.x

Camera : 8 Mega pixel Auto Focus camera with Flash and Zero Shutter Lag (Rear)
1.9 Mega pixel camera, HD recording @30fps with Zero Shutter Lag (Front)

The rear camera carries the same specs as the S2 with one exception. ZERO SHUTTER LAG. Which means zero delay when taking photos, making capturing moments that much easier. Which was one of the concern I had for the S2. Which has a 0.3-0.4 second delay when taking photos.

The S3 can also take photos while recording videos in HD. Able to take burst shots (Captures up to 6 Frames per second, and a recent rival juggernaught's is only capable of capturing 4 frames per second

As for the front camera, the S2 is equipped with a 2.0 Mega pixel camera, a 5% downgrade. But again with Zero shutter lag and also HD recording (720p)

Connectivity : WiFi a/b/g/n, WiFi HT40,GPS/GLONASS, NFC, Bluetooth® 4.0(LE)
Sensor : Accelerometer, RGB light, Digital compass, Proximity, Gyro, Barometer
Memory : 16/32GB User memory (64GB available soon) + microSD slot (up to 64GB)

Dimension : 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm, 133g (S2 : 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm, 116g)

Sideview of the S3

Just leaning slightly bigger and a feather heavier than the S2, probably to compensate the larger screen size. As mentioned earlier did not give a bulky impression

Battery : 2,100 mAh (S2 : 1650 mAh)

Hey better battery life! No complains here. Like about 20% larger battery capacity.

With it's improved battery capacity, gaming sessions will be longer and more intense with the larger screen size

Main Features

Not all the features will be mentioned here, only the ones that caught my attention

S Voice
Introducing ‘S Voice’, the Samsung GALAXY S III’s advanced natural language understanding, listens and responds to a user’s words – allowing information search, basic device-user communication, and powerful device control functions like “snooze” for the alarm, playing a favourite song, turning the volume up or down, sending text messages and emails, organising schedules, or automatically launching the camera and capturing photos.

The days of driving alone is now over, simply speak to Galaxy S3 and it will answer your every request.

Didn't manage to test out this feature as the phones on display didn't have network connectivity

Direct Call
The Samsung GALAXY S III understands a user’s motions with ‘Direct Call’. If a user decides to call someone while on a message, simply lifting the phone up to the ear will automatically call that person.

A great feature that utilizes the proximity sensor as well as the gyro meter to activate the feature

Burst shot & Best photo
The ‘Burst Shot’ function on the Samsung GALAXY S III gives users the option of instantly capturing twenty continuous shots, and the ‘Best Photo’ feature selects the best eight photographs, ensuring users a more enhanced and memorable camera experience.

Pop up play
With the ‘Pop Up Play’ feature, users can play a video anywhere on the Samsung GALAXY S III’s screen while simultaneously checking emails or SMS, eliminating the need to close and restarting of videos.

Bob utilizes the Pop-up play feature, watching Twilight while discussing on it's merit with his girlfriend who is sitting on the other end

S Beam
With the ‘S Beam’, instant sharing of files becomes a breeze. Users can share files just by touching two Samsung GALAXY S III phones back to back.

S Beam in action, sharing has never been easier

Smart Stay
With the innovative ‘Smart Stay’ feature, the Samsung GALAXY S III recognizes your eye movements – reading an e-book or browsing the web, for instance – by having the front camera identify with your eyes; the phone maintains a bright display for a continued and uninterrupted viewing pleasure.

The official accessories for the S3

After seeing the S3, and comparing the upgrades. I would definitely take it if the situation allows me to. The improvement over it's predecessor on it's Processor, Display Screen, Battery Capacity, Camera Shutter Speed is just hard to ignore.

edit: Just go an email from Digi itself stating that the S3 will be available for RM999 with Digi Smart Plan 88.

Hi MontyAshley,

Don't think I'll be dropping by unless there's a function going on.

Hi... Nice review.. does the Malaysia version support 4g network?

Do u think it's worth while to change to this phone? Because after a while there will be a custom rom available for the Gs2 that will have the gs3 feel...suggestion?

Ryan said...

Personally from my standpoint I wouldn't change to the S3 as the S2 is still doing great for me. But that's just me.

The malaysian S3 wouldn't support 4g network unless it's an LTE version.

Do you know where can i get the LTE version of the S3 here in Malaysia?

Do you think there will be a sales ban now that Apple has won the legal battle with Samsung for copying critical features in the iPhone?
