A couple of months back I was invited by Rhine River's marketing team for a Knuckle Eating Challenge at Black Forest which was at the Changkat Bukit Bintang stretch.
Though I must admit that I've never been in an eating competition before and this will be my first time joining such events.
The Pork Knuckles which was just a part of the meal that must be finished within 28 minutes, did I make it? Click on read-more to find out
Arrived at the place just on time but due to the heavy rain that day, most of the contestants couldn't make it on time and I had some spare time to check out the rest of Black Forest
I thought this was my first time in Black Forest but somehow the place felt familiar, upon deep contemplation, I remembered I was here last year with a friend for some bar hopping shenanigans. Though the memory was rather murky one thing I do remember was ordering a beer tower where the tower was a replica of a Blue Eiffel towel and the bartender getting us free shots
Well I managed to find the picture from a year ago. But I'm not sure if it's the same place looking back at the picture again.
The Eating Challenge :
So within 28 minutes, each contestant must consume all of the following :
1) 1 Pork Knuckle
2) 1 Portion of French Fries
3) 1 Portion of Salad
4) 1 Litre of Carlsberg beer
So if you manage to do it within 28 minutes, the meal is free and your photograph will be on the wall of fame and you walk home with a T-Shirt.
But if you don't, you'll have to pay for the meal (RM120) and have your picture taken as well for the WALL OF SHAME
While waiting for the rest of the contestants to arrive, the restaurant served us some drinks and food but I've declined any as I wanted my stomach to be as empty as possible
Benjamin kept insisting that I have a taste of the food, which I politely declined over and over again
More food being served on the table as I starved on :
Bacon everything! Some of the snacks that were served to us. Prawn wrapped with bacon and Sausages wrapped with bacon.
If it wasn't for the food challenge I would have pigged out on the things that were served :(
After an hour or so the rest of the contestants arrived and off we went to the challenge.
Being interviewed by the emcee of the evening, asking us how we felt. I reverted to a stone-age mentality and muttered "Man hungry, want food and woman"
Trying to get into a zen mode while the food was on the way.
But once the food arrived on our table, everything changed, check out the contestants reactions :
Some of them had a determined face, but I had a "holy mother of pigs this is going to be messy" face.
We started devouring our pork knuckles as soon as the emcee blew the whistle.
While most of them resorted to using their bare hands to eat, I for one couldn't bear for such savagery and opted to use fork and knifes. LIKE A GENTLEMEN SHOULD
When I first started the challenge, my strategy was to finish the pork knuckles first while using the beer to wash down all the fats, but it turns out the fats were really hard to chew so I tried swallowing them with minor success.
One of the supporters coming over to give a pep-talk to one of the contestants, something about walking home if he fails.
There was a bucket in-front of us just in case one of us couldn't handle it and had to spew, but the thought of someone doing that while the challenge is still going on might set off a chain of food spewing which will look like something out of an exorcist scene.
One thing I've learnt from this is that never ever stop shoving food down your throat or else you'll start to feel bloated when you stop.
I was almost done with the pork knuckles at that point but there was still fats left to swallow
The stressed-out faces starting to show on everyone as they continue to try finishing the knuckles :
28 minutes passed and this was how my plate looked like before and after the challenge :
I manage to finish most of my pork knuckles but there was still a pint of Carlsberg and some fries left as well as some salad.
We were asked how we felt after the challenge and my reply was "I think I'm vegetarian now". I felt totally and utterly defeated by just 1 kilogram of pork knuckles.
None of us manage to finish everything within 28 minutes that night. Some of them ran straight for the toilet after it ended and wasn't seen until 20 minutes later.
We were also offered desserts after the challenge and somehow the girls still had space for it. It's like somehow the mere mention of the word 'desserts' is a secret code that activates a black hole in their stomach to suck enough food into the abyss for desserts.
Well after the challenge, I've stopped having cravings for pork for the next few weeks but now I'm back to square one :
Polo Pork Bun from Tai Lei Loi Kei 大利来记
